Understanding the Registration Process for Farmers Markets in Oklahoma
Hello, I’m Oklahoma City business law attorney Dillan Savage with Wirth Law Office, and I practice primarily in the Oklahoma City area. Today I’m going to talk about the requirements for registering and operating a farmer’s market in Oklahoma.
The process can be lengthy, so if you don’t feel comfortable handling it on your own after reviewing the statutes or hearing this explanation, it’s a good idea to contact our office or another law office for guidance. That way, you can be sure everything is done correctly, and your market is registered successfully.
Requirements for Registration
To register a farmer’s market, you must be a manager or advisory board member authorized to register with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture. The market must meet several requirements under the Oklahoma Farmer’s Market and Farmer’s Hub Act. In addition to meeting these requirements, you’ll need to submit paperwork to the Department of Agriculture.
If you choose to move forward without an attorney, you can find the statutes in Title 2, Section 5-A.3. You can also find the necessary forms and filing information on the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture’s website.
The statute outlines the required information, including:
-
- The market’s location
-
- The name and contact information of the manager or advisory board member
-
- Letters of intent from at least four independent vendors of raw food products
-
- The geographic location of the market
Responsibilities of the Manager
The manager or advisory board member serves as the official point of contact with the Department of Agriculture and is responsible for submitting all required documentation.
