Understanding the Basics of Becoming a Scrap Metal Dealer in Oklahoma
Hello, I’m Oklahoma City business law attorney Dillan Savage of Wirth Law Office, and I practice primarily in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma area. Today we are going to be talking about scrap metal dealers.
In order to become a scrap metal dealer in the state of Oklahoma, you must have a license from the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture. You cannot simply decide one day to start the business without first being licensed.
Steps to Apply for a Scrap Metal Dealer License
So, what does the process consist of? You will need to file an application with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture. If you are applying as an individual, you must provide your name, residence, and other personal information.
However, most people will not apply as individuals. Instead, they will apply as a business—such as a corporation, LLC, or other entity. In that case, you must provide both business information and personal information. The individual completing the application must list their full name, residence, and position within the business.
You must also provide business details such as the name and location where you will conduct the scrap metal business. Importantly, if you are granted a license, you are only allowed to conduct business at the location listed on the application.
Essential Requirements and Fees
So, make sure you carefully decide where you want your business to operate, as choosing incorrectly could create problems later. In addition, your application must include proof of general liability insurance for the business, proof that you either own or lease the property where the business will operate, and proof of a dedicated phone line for the business.
There will also be a background investigation into the individuals conducting the business, primarily to check for criminal activity. The application includes non-refundable fees, usually around $200 or more. If you are approved, the license is valid for one year unless you voluntarily give it up.
