Understanding Wild Boar Hunting Regulations in Oklahoma
Hello, I’m Oklahoma City attorney Dillan Savage at Wirth Law Office, and I practice primarily in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma area. Today we are going to be talking about wild boar, otherwise known as wild swine. Specifically, we’ll be looking at Title 2 in Agriculture—Sections 6-604 and 6-605.
Many individuals are under the impression that they can hunt wild boar at any time of the year, without needing a license or permit. While that’s true in certain situations, it’s not always the case.
Hunting Permissions and Licenses
If you want to hunt wild boar and remove them from an area, you need permission to enter someone’s land—whether public or private. Once you have permission, you can hunt wild boar during daylight hours without a license.
However, if you’re planning to hunt at night, you will need a license issued by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. You can find the details under Section 4-135 of Title 29.
That’s not the only issue to keep in mind. Under Section 6-605, during specific hunting seasons—such as primitive firearms season—you will need a special permit. Fortunately, these are usually issued upon request without much trouble.
Exceptions and Legal Advice
There are some exceptions. For example, if you have a valid hunting license for deer during the appropriate season, you may be exempt from needing the special permit.
Still, if you’re not certain whether you’re meeting all the requirements under the statutes, it’s always best to consult with an attorney first. You don’t want to risk breaking the law or facing a misdemeanor and several fines.
