Understanding Oklahoma’s Laws on Horse Meat Sale
Hello, I’m Oklahoma City attorney Dillan Savage of Wirth Law Office, and I practice primarily in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma area.
Today we are going to be talking about horses—more specifically, the transportation, exhibition for sale, and the sale of horse meat for human consumption.
The Unlawfulness of Horse Meat Sale in Oklahoma
Oklahoma frowns upon this practice to such a degree that it is actually unlawful to exhibit for sale, to sell, or even to possess horse meat with the intent to sell it for human consumption within the state.
This isn’t something we typically think about here in the United States, as horses are most often seen as companions or used in competitive sports, not as a food source.
Additionally, it is unlawful for an individual to transfer possession of horse meat to someone else if they could reasonably believe that person intends to sell it for human consumption.
Corporations and Sale of Horse Meat
This law doesn’t apply only to individuals—corporations and other business entities are also prohibited from selling horse meat for human consumption in Oklahoma.
So, across the board, selling horse meat for human consumption is unlawful in Oklahoma.
