Understanding the Consequences of Interfering with Firefighters and Forest Rangers
Hello, I’m Oklahoma City felony defense attorney Dillan Savage with Wirth Law Office, and I practice primarily in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma area. Today we’re going to talk about the crime and punishment for interfering with or assaulting forest rangers and firefighters in Oklahoma.
The Legal Framework Surrounding This Offense
Unlike most crimes, which are found under Title 21, this offense is located in Title 2 (Agriculture), Section 16-6. According to this statute, if you willfully and knowingly assault, molest, or interfere with a forest ranger or firefighter while they are performing their duties, you can be found guilty of a felony.
And this doesn’t just refer to physical interference. It also includes:
-
- Intentionally blocking a road to prevent them from reaching or fighting a fire
-
- Damaging firefighting equipment or vehicles used to respond to emergencies
In short, any action that obstructs these professionals from doing their job can lead to felony charges.
